A large, evergreen shrub or small tree. The fern-like leaves are grey-green and covered with a silvery down when young. Fragrant yellow flowers produced from mid winter to early spring, borne in 16-23cm (6-9in) long panicles. The popular golden mimosa of florists. Native to South east Australia and Tasmania. Frost can be a problem as the stems are killed when the temperature stays below -5°C for a prolonged period. It can shoot from the base in spring if the shoots are killed during winter. Plant in a lime-free soil against a sheltered wall in full sun.
Height 10m (30ft), Spread 4m (13ft), 20-50 years to maturity.
