A narrowly upright, clump-forming, softly hairy perennial, often grown as an annual or biennial, with ovate to lance-shaped, dark green leaves and erect, black stems bearing terminal racemes of two-lipped, dark red to maroon flowers from summer into autumn.
Height 60cm (2ft), Spread 50cm (1.5ft), 2-5 years to maturity.
