An upright, deciduous shrub with thorny branches bearing pinnate leaves divided into large, glossy, toothed, dark-green leaflets. In summer and autumn, it bears clusters of large, strongly fragrant, double, white flowers, sometimes flushed pink, with yellow stamens.
