A vigorous, upright perennial with erect stems, each bearing a whorl of three broadly ovate, pointed, mid-green leaves and, in spring, stalked, outward-facing, reddish-purple flowers, sometimes white or yellow, with spreading to slightly recurved petals.
Height 50cm (1.5ft), Spread 30cm (1ft), 2-5 years to maturity.
