Phormium tenax 'Purpureum' (New Zealand Flax)

An excellent architectural plant with bronze-purple sword-like leaves. It reaches 1m (3ft) in five years and takes 20 years to reach around 2.5m (8ft) in height and spread. It does send up a flowering spike, but only when it has reached some maturity and this adds 1-2m (3-7ft) to its height. This plant is happy at swampy pond edges as well as dryer conditions.
Height 4m (13ft), Spread 2m (6ft), 10-20 years to maturity.
