A spreading, mushroom-headed, deciduous tree with weeping branches bearing elliptic to ovate, wavy-margined, purple-black leaves that turn red-brown in autumn. Inconspicuous yellow-green flowers in spring are followed by spiny, capsule-like fruit in autumn.
